Afandou

Two beaches on one 4 km shore, the island's only golf course, and a village built to stay out of sight.

Afandou takes its name from afantos, Greek for invisible. The village was built inland, out of sight of the pirates sailing past. Today it's Kolympia's neighbour to the north, and the two share a municipality.

Two beaches, one shore

Afandou's coast is a single run of about 4 km of fine pebbles and sand, with two beaches on it:

  • Afandou Beach: the long main stretch. Clear water that deepens quickly, sunbeds in places and plenty of open space in between
  • Traganou: the north end, with smooth pebbles, bright blue water and small sea caves to swim into

Things to do

  • Afandou Golf: the only golf course on Rhodes, 18 holes between the village and the sea
  • Watersports, beach volleyball and football on the sand
  • In summer, a little train runs from the village square down to the beach

Hidden gems

  • The church of Panagia Katholiki, with 17th-century frescoes, at the centre of the village's big August festival
  • Afandou's carpets, once known across the island; the village folk art exhibition shows how they were woven
  • Traganou's caves, at their best on a calm morning

Ten minutes from the villas. Spend the morning on the beach and have lunch in the village square.
