Archangelos
One of the island's biggest villages, with a castle, potters and a dialect all its own.
Archangelos is ten minutes south of Kolympia and nothing like a resort. It's one of the largest villages on Rhodes, with a busy square, kafeneia full by mid-morning, and an accent other islanders recognise straight away.
What to see
- The ruined castle of the Knights of St John on the hill, from the 15th century, with views to the sea
- The church of the Archangel Michael and its tall bell tower
- Pottery workshops on the main road, still making hand-painted ceramics
- Handmade leather boots, a village craft a few workshops keep going
Good to know
Come in the evening, when the square fills up, and eat in the village rather than on the coast. Stegna's beach is a few minutes down the hill.
