Tsambika Beach and Monastery

Golden sand below, a white monastery above, and around 300 steps between them.

Tsambika is the beach most people picture when they think of Rhodes: a wide golden bay, water that stays shallow a long way out, and hills on both sides that keep the wind down.

The climb

On the peak to the north sits the small monastery of Panagia Tsambika. Drive up the access road, then walk the last stretch, around 300 steps. Go early or late; there's little shade. From the top you see Kolympia's bay to the north and the coast running south towards Lindos.

The monastery is a place of pilgrimage. By tradition, women hoping for a child climb up to pray, and children born afterwards are often named Tsambikos or Tsambika.

On the beach

  • Sunbeds, tavernas and watersports in summer
  • Shallow, warm water, good for children
  • Ten minutes from the villas
