Mount Attavyros
The island's highest summit, with a sanctuary of Zeus at the top.
Attavyros rises more than 1,200 metres above the wine village of Embonas, bare and rocky towards the top. Legend says the sanctuary of Zeus on its summit was founded by Althaemenes, a grandson of King Minos of Crete.
The climb
A path leaves from the edge of Embonas and climbs steadily over stony ground. Allow four to five hours there and back, start early, and carry plenty of water: there's no shade on the upper slopes.
At the top
Scattered stones of the ancient sanctuary, and a view across the whole island and out to sea.
Good to know
- Go in spring or autumn; summer days are very hot
- Wear proper walking shoes
- Finish with lunch and a glass of wine in Embonas
