An Embonas wine tour
Terraced vineyards, tastings and a long lunch in the island's wine village.
Embonas sits on the slopes of Attavyros, at over 1,200 metres the highest mountain on Rhodes. The terraces around the village are the heart of the island's wine country.
The grapes
- Athiri: a crisp, citrusy white, grown on the high terraces
- Mandilaria, called Amorgiano on Rhodes: deep-coloured, firm reds
- Muscat, for the sweet wines
Where to taste
Emery, run by the Triantafyllou family since 1923, is the largest winery in the village and offers tours and tastings. Smaller family wineries are dotted around Embonas, and plenty of kafeneia pour their own. Try souma too, the local grape spirit, and the honey in Siana, the next village along.

Lunch
Embonas is known for its meat tavernas: grilled lamb and pork, village bread and salads, with the house red.
Good to know
It's about 35 minutes from the villas on mountain roads, so pick a driver before the first glass.
