Kitesurfing at Prasonisi
Two seas, one sandbar, and some of the best wind in Europe.
At the southern tip of Rhodes, a sandbar runs out to the small island of Prasonisi. On its west side is the Aegean, usually wavy; on the east, the Mediterranean, usually flat. In summer the meltemi, a steady northerly wind, blows across both.
On the water
That combination has made Prasonisi one of Europe's best-known kitesurfing and windsurfing spots: flat water for learning and freestyle on one side, waves for the experienced on the other. Schools on the beach rent equipment and teach every level, from first lessons up.

Not a surfer?
Walk across the sand to the island and up to its 19th-century lighthouse, or just sit and watch the kites. In winter the sea sometimes covers the sandbar and Prasonisi becomes an island again.
